Small Ways to Help an Older Neighbour This Winter

Winter is harder for older people living alone. Pavements get icy, buses feel further away and days can go by without a proper conversation. You don't need to be a carer to help. Most of what makes a difference takes ten minutes.

How do you offer help without being pushy?

Start with something small and specific. "I'm going to the supermarket on Saturday, do you need anything?" is easier to say yes to than "let me know if you ever need anything". Leave a note with your name, house number and phone number so they can reach you.

Which jobs make the biggest difference?

Collecting prescriptions, putting the bins out on collection day, clearing ice from the front step and posting letters all save an older neighbour a risky trip outside. On Local Now, people ask for exactly these things. One recent request was simply: could someone collect Mum's prescription on Thursday?

What about company?

A regular visit matters more than a big gesture. A cup of tea once a week, a phone call when the weather is bad, or bringing round a spare portion of dinner gives someone something to look forward to. If they enjoy it, ask whether they'd like to join a local Space for a craft group or coffee morning.

When should you get more help?

If your neighbour seems confused, isn't eating, or their home is very cold, speak to their family if you know them. You can also contact Lancashire County Council's adult social care team, or call 999 in an emergency. Age UK Lancashire offers advice and services for older people across the county.

How Local Now can help

If you look out for a parent who lives in Chorley but you live elsewhere, you can ask their neighbours for a hand through Local Now. Requests stay within the local community and your full postcode is never shown.
